Jason Hindley, Course Instructor
I am a martial arts and self defence instructor with 40 years experience teaching self defence strategies and techniques to people of all ages.
I specialise in teaching personal safety courses to children in school years 5, 6 and 7 as they start to walk to school without parental supervision.

The course gives children the confidence and skills to deal with any potentially threatening situation they may find themselves in when they are out on their own, giving parents peace of mind that their child can deal with the threat they face in the right way.
I also teach a ladies self defence course which empowers women to deal with any threat to their safety. This course covers situational awareness, fear management, the law and self defence, and practical easy to learn self defence techniques that work under high levels of emotional stress.
As well as various martial arts grades, Jason also holds a BTEC Level 3 qualification in self defence tuition, and a BTEC Level 3 qualification in Conflict Management. Both these qualifications were attained with the National Federation for Personal Safety, a very well respected training company within the security space.

Why School Years 5, 6 and 7?
I remember the panic I felt when my son first asked me if he could walk to and from school on his own. How could I ensure his safety if I wasn’t there with him?
The thought terrified me. However the reality is that we have to let our children fly on their own at some point. I then began to think about what could I do to make his journey safer when I’m not there.
I thought about what kind of scenarios he may find himself in, and what strategies he should use to keep himself safe. From that premise I developed a training plan where I taught him some physical self defence techniques, and I talked to him about situational awareness, controlling fear and what he could do legally to protect himself.
Once he was armed with this knowledge, I felt much better about letting him walk to and from school on his own. The worry never goes away, but at least I had given him something he could use rather than not knowing what to do at all.
It then struck me that I couldn’t be alone in feeling that way, surely other parents go through the same panic as I did?
I spoke to other parents and found out that they had exactly the same fears as myself. I told them about the training I had given my son and would they be interested in the same training?
The answer was a resounding yes, so I spent time developing the training I had given my son into a 4 week course, and I now teach regular personal safety courses to children in school years 5, 6 and 7 who have started to walk to school on their own.
To date (October 2025) I have taught over 700 school children since I began developing the course in 2019.
