FAQ’s For Headteachers

Is the course age appropriate for Primary school pupils?
Yes, absolutely. The course has been designed specifically for children aged 10 to 12, with every aspect (from the language we use to the physical techniques we teach) tailored to suit their cognitive, emotional, and physical development. The focus is not on combat or aggression, but rather on awareness, emotional regulation and self-protection in a way that children can understand.
How do you handle the subject of self defence and the law?
Understanding the legal framework around self-defence is a key part of our course. We explain the concept of “reasonable force” in a way that is accessible for primary-aged children, ensuring they understand the legal, moral, and practical boundaries of protecting themselves. This helps prevent confusion and encourages responsible behaviour.
How does the course align with safeguarding policies?
All our instructors are enhanced DBS checked, have trained in child protection and safeguarding procedures, and have experience in working within school environments. We adhere strictly to school safeguarding protocols, including visitor sign-in procedures, behaviour policies, and supervision requirements. A full risk assessment and lesson overview will be provided in advance of any booking.
Does the training promote violence or cause behavioural issues?
No. Our sessions place a strong emphasis on de-escalation, conflict avoidance, and the importance of using self-defence only as a last resort. We reinforce values such as respect, responsibility, and self-control throughout the course. Conflict avoidance and de-escalation are the major principles we enforce during the training.
What space & equipment do you need to deliver the course?
We require a large space (such as sports hall, assembly hall, etc) to safely accommodate a full classroom of children to train in. We teach the children how to fall safely and defend themselves from the floor, so we will need some kind of matting. Access to a white screen to run presentations on is desirable but not a deal breaker. Set up and take down time is minimal. We will need the class teacher to remain in the room as good safeguarding practise.
How flexible are you with scheduling and timetables?
We work entirely around your school’s needs. Whether you want a full-day workshop, a multi-day programme, or a series of shorter sessions, we can tailor the delivery to minimise disruption. We’ve delivered courses during curriculum time, PSHE weeks, and even transition periods for Year 6’s.
What benefits will children and their parents actually see?
- increased confidence & self awareness
- how to avoid and respond to unsafe situations
- improved emotional regulation and how to manage fear
Parents often tell us how reassured they feel knowing their children have gained real-world life skills that aren’t typically covered in the curriculum. This can be especially valuable as pupils prepare for secondary school.
Do you have references or testimonials from other schools?
Yes, we do. We have worked in two local schools and delivered the course in each school for over 4 years now. The headteachers at these schools would be more than happy to speak to other headteachers about the effectiveness of the programme and also how well it fits into existing school values and curriculum aims.
